Is it the End of Skinny Jeans?

What comes next for denim jeans?

After dominating the shape of denim jeans for well over a decade, are we seeing the twilight days of skinny jeans? And what will come in its place?

Denim origins

Denim jeans are one of the must-have pieces in every person’s closet. Always stylish and fashionable, denim jeans are an irreplaceable part of the wardrobe, that fits many fashion styles and constantly appears high on the list of fashion trends. From the first moment they appeared on the fashion scene, they have risen to the level of a necessary fashion garment.

The origins of denim jeans is widely known. It began in the 1800s when the farmers and cowboys needed suitable and durable clothes for their jobs through varying seasons and weather conditions. Denim, unlike other fabrics at that time, showed incredible durability and strength, allowing the farmers and cowboys to wear it over and over again. It was not long after that the fashion industry acknowledged the properties and benefits of this fabulous fabric and decided to incorporate it into mass fashion production. They were an instant hit, and this opened the door for denim jeans to become a mainstay in popular fashion and culture for over a century.

Denim today

Today, denim jeans come in an abundance of styles, shapes and colours and are worn for much more than toiling the farm or governing the wild west. Global fashion brands such as Levis, Wrangler and Carhartt have forged an iconic reputation for their ability to create incredible denim products and style them to match with the times. And with the circular nature of fashion trends, many of the vintage jeans that peaked in popularity in the 70s, 80s or 90s are becoming the hottest style to rock.

Since the early to mid-2000s, skinny jeans have been the dominant style of denim. You would have a tough time finding someone who did not have at least one pair of skinny jeans in their closet. Skinny jeans were the go-to clothing choice for many, especially because of their versatility, easily paired with a variety of styles and footwear. Besides that, the skinny jeans carried one important message that was closely connected to the promotion of body positivity. The skinny jeans here, with all the varied forms they came in, carried a message that all bodies are beautiful, no matter the size or the shape.

However, the pandemic, lockdown, and limited social interaction have put a spin on the purpose of fashion. Over the last two years, the fashion cult of comfort has come to the forefront. And whilst skinny jeans are many things, comfortable is rarely one of them. Fashions focus shifted away from a thin silhouette in favour of baggier, looser looks.

The latest trends

The latest trends show that skinny jeans are currently experiencing their lowest point in popularity in decades and are being switched out with more comfortable choices. In line with this, vintage denim such as Levis, Wrangler, Dickies and Carhartt have seen a resurgence in popularity, particularly their baggier workwear style designs. Other popular jeans styles include flared jeans, boyfriend jeans, and the classic straight cut. So, with all these new options prevailing over skinny jeans, is their end final, or is it just temporary?

Like all trends in fashion, skinny jeans will undoubtedly rise to the top once again, but not for some time. Until then, the more comfortable cuts rule supreme in the fashion scene and market. And here is what is currently trending and considered a long-overdue and modern switch from the skinny jeans:

Wide-leg and flared

The comeback of 70s fashion has been reflected in denim. Exemplifying this, wide-legged and flared jeans are trending, which were hugely popular in their heyday. With a new twist of a higher waist, the wide and flared cuts still maintain the cool, retro vibe of the 70s.

High-waisted straight jeans

Straight jeans have always been prominent in mainstream fashion. And in the timeline of denim fashion, the straight leg jeans came just after the era of flared and before the skinnies. They are often seen as a classic, providing timeless style and unparalleled versatility when putting together an outfit. Whilst it's safe to say that straight cut jeans never went out of style, only recently have they overtaken skinny jeans to become one of the most popular choices for fashionistas the world over.

Baggy and loose

When combining maximum comfort with denim, one style springs to mind, and that’s baggy jeans. Resembling 90s street style, the look accentuates comfortability. The baggy, loose cut of the jeans offers a range of movements that made skaters rejoice as they did kickflips and rappers kick back in stylish comfort. So if you’re looking for a relaxed retro look, these are the jeans for you.

Ultimately, fashion is about self-expression and there really isn’t a right answer. But as time goes on and this style of denim jeans falls out of favour, it won’t be long before skinny jeans are in the minority as they make way for a new silhouette and dominant style.
